I stand with Moe on Rule 5, but maybe for a different reason

Moe Lane, that is.  I’m not much of a Rule 5 guy either.(For those of you not following that link, Stacy McCain’s Rule 5 for generating blog traffic is to post cheesecake photos.)

OK, there’s this. But Rule 5 is not a regular feature around here. And you have to admit today’s contribution (right) is pretty damn tame.

But I have maybe an odd reason for not posting more Rule 5 photos. It’s not that I find it exploitative or offensive (and that all depends on how cheeecake-y the photo is). It’s that way too many of today’s celebrities that are considered “hot” . . . aren’t.  At least not in my book. (I’ve mentioned before (in the post linked above) that I’m picky. But, hey, it’s all hypothetical anyway, as I am happily married.)

Paradoxically, perhaps, considering I’m closing in on 50, many of the younger starlets  don’t do much for me. It’s an odd thing . . . a young lady I meet in real life or see walking down the street . . . yeah, I notice. But I just don’t get how certain “beautiful” people among the youngsters these days came to be so widely perceived as such.

In my 30s, many of my younger contemporaries were ga-ga over Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts. Are you kidding me? No offense to Ms. Roberts, I’m sure she’s a nice gal, but . . .

Today it seems to be that anyone who bares skin, has a good figure, or gets a lot of exposure is deemed beautiful, without considering beauty. Maybe I’m getting beautiful mixed up with hot.

Fortunately, none of this prevents me from joining the Rule 5 crowd in order to get linked in the Rule 5 round-ups Smitty posts at The Other McCain on Sundays. Follow some of the links in those round-ups, and you’ll see that several regulars have their own take on Rule 5. (I like Paco’s.) So maybe I’ll try to get in on the action from time to time.

Now, I know McLovin’ is reading this and thinking to himself, “Dude, does your wife know you’re writing this?” Well, not exactly, but she wouldn’t mind.

How do I know? My wife actually points out attractive women to me and asks my opinion. For most guys, a wife asking “She’s attractive, don’t you think?” is no different than “Does this dress make me look fat?”  There’s only one answer, regardless of what you actually think. But I always feel free to answer that honestly.

Oh, yeah, check out Moe’s post for a link to a post at TMZ exposing the double standard in topless beauty queens.  And I don’t mean real versus natural. (Heh. Double standard. Topless. Get it? That was a compete accident.)

UPDATE (5/12/09): Ace thinks a little differently: “Guys, this is the whole package right here.”
