David Brooks wakes up and smells the Kool-Aid while “Republicans for Obama” remain as clueless as ever

There is a lot posted on righty blogs already (like at Ace, Michelle, and HotAir) about NYT columnist David Brooks’s all-too-predictable lament that he was hoodwinked by Obama the moderate during the campaign only to find the country run by Obama the extremist:

Those of us who consider ourselves moderates — moderate-conservative, in my case — are forced to confront the reality that Barack Obama is not who we thought he was.

Gee, ya think?  And you couldn’t predict this, you pointy-headed Ivy League brainiac?  Well, the answer is no, he couldn’t figure it out, because he refused to look at the evidence.

But he thinks moderates like himself can correct their own error and fix the president and his administration:

[M]aybe [moderates] can lure this White House back to its best self — and someday offer respite from the endless war of the extremes.

Doesn’t he understand that it’s not a war of extremes when Democrats are running the show?  That Democrats are simply incapable of  exploiting wedge issues, and that it is only because of surly Republicans that there is any rancor at all?

Allahpundit summed up Brooks’s battle cry quite well:

From there [Brooks] segues into a cri de coeur for a plucky band of moderates to seize the good ship America and heroically steer her between Obaman Scylla and Palinite Charybdis, although what that would entail beyond him and Frum periodically firing off ever more dour and exasperated op-eds is unclear.

Allahpundit also points out that Christopher Buckley recently sounded a similar alarm (though in decidedly lukewarm fashion).  Meanwhile, the Republicans for Obama remain clueless.  Still at their website:

We want Obama to continue to unite the American majority that wants to move forward and improve the long-term economic well-being and independence of our nation.

UPDATE: Ed Driscoll notes another convert.  (H/T: The Anchoress.)
