Good news from a remote island

The Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, with a population of 186,000, just voted to become a “fully-fledged part of France,” which will require it to abandon some of its local legal customs. With a 61% voter turnout, the vote wax more than 95% in favor of the change in status.
Why should we care?
95% of the [...]

Tweeting and Driving: OnStar to provide voice-activated Twitter interface

Oh, good grief.
Voice to text conversion using your in-car hands-free system so that you can both post to Twitter, and hear what is going on with your friends. Kind of crazy when you first think about it, but after a few minutes, you can start to imagine some cool uses. You can voice-tweet something like [...]

Apparently it’s OK to breed like rabbits, so long as you’re not a Christian

Two articles in two days from two different sources on the Quiverfull Movement caught my eye.  Quiverfull is a movement within the Christian church that advocates no “family planning” — you get the children God decides to give, and that’s that.  Some would say that means automatic advocacy for large families, and to a large [...]

More dishonesty on illegal immigration

Michelle Malkin has video of Geraldo Rivera addressing some group, complaining that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is wasting manpower on workplace raids when it should be going after gangs.  He poses the issue as a matter of priorities, but I think that’s dishonest.
Let’s assume that we had rounded up all the gangbanger and violent [...]

What makes America different?

If you’ve ever used the word “Euro-weenie” or a similar derogatory appellation for a pampered Euro peacenik, but you’ve never been able to put your finger on exactly what makes America and Americans different from our European counterparts, then you must read Charles Murray’s piece at The American magazine: The Europe Syndrome and the Challenge to [...]

A bizarre, sad legacy of suicide

Nothing snarky here.  Nothing funny.  No politics.  Just an observation on a sad story.
I’m no literary connoisseur.  My taste in fiction (though its hard for me to remember the last time I read any) runs toward horror or spy novels.  In other words, I don’t read any “deep” fiction.
But even I recognized the name of [...]

I don’t care what they say, there’s no such thing as a “Code Pink Cutie,” and why conservative women are inherently more attractive than liberal women

Someone please track down Uncle Jimbo and the guy in the Blackfive video and slap them back to reality. They seem to think that the young Code Pinko’s Blackfive interviewed are “cute.” Let’s get this straight: for a conservative, there should be no such thing as a “Code Pink Cutie.”
Let’s start with the girls in [...]

First black first family is apparently first at everything, in some people’s minds

It never ceases to amaze me how lefties project their own faults onto conservatives.  So, Michelle Obama doing so doesn’t surprise me all that much (as reported by the Wall Street Journal):
By choosing Fort Bragg for her first official trip outside the capital last Thursday, Michelle Obama signaled that she will use her position as [...]

It’s as if Barack Obama and Sarah Palin were a zero-sum game

At least, according to Ace:
Barack Obama isn’t merely destroying his own unearned reputation for smarts; he’s adding to Sarah Palin’s day by day. The public is beginning to wonder if Obama really was as prepared and brilliant as he press swore; and if they’re wondering about that, they must also be wondering about other claims [...]

If the death threats were directed at gays instead of bonus-receiving AIG execs, do you think Barney Frank would refuse confidentiality?

Disgusting.  Every time I see Frank’s fat face on TV, I want to punch it in.

My fastest blog post ever

Well, it’s not really this post that’s fast.  It was the writing.
On the advice of The Other McCain.
Based on this result, I’d say my methodology still needs tweaking.
But I have a lot to overcome.

Anticipating the charge: “Rich Lowry — Racist!”

It’s a bogus charge that’s been made before (which I guess can be said for most high-profile conservatives), but look for cries of “Rich Lowry is a racist” to resume because of his apt summary of a large part of President Obama’s young presidency in his piece, “The Obama Three-Step”:
Barack Obama has perfected a three-step maneuver that [...]

Digging up biases is not the same as a personal attack; why the lefty coordination to investigate Obama critics’ backgrounds doesn’t piss me off

When I read this post a American Glob about lefty groups coordinating with each other to investigate Obama critics, I was prepared to be pissed off.  The post’s title said the groups were “digging for dirt” on Obama’s critics, and the quotes from the referenced Politico piece seemed to imply a rather nefarious scheme to expose [...]

Either somebody went through an awful lot of trouble to put up a fake, but incredibly official-looking website, or the Connecticut General Assembly has at least one certifiable whack job out to get the Catholic church

Wait a minute.  ”One certifiable whack job”?  In retrospect, that seems a little silly.  The average for legislatures overall has to be that 30-40% of their memebrship are whack jobs.  But I digress.
So anyway, Gateway Pundit has a post up saying that a bill proposed in the Connecticut legislature that would “put local laymen leadership [...]

Stop trying to mitigate what Rush said and embrace it instead

Patterico has a poll of sorts up, asking people to answer this question in the comments to his post (yes, with bullets AND numbers!):
However, when [Rush Limbaugh] says “I want Obama to fail,” what did he mean? His line could have meant one of two things:

1. Rush opposes President Obama’s [...]

Is Ed Morrissey really missing the obvious? UPDATE: Apparently, not!

Ed Morrissey apparently finds it dishonest for Democrats to lambaste Rush Limbaugh over his comment that a health care bill would be named after Ted Kennedy, since they themselves suggested it less than two months ago.   But what did Rush actually say?  Here it is, with my emphasis:

Before it’s all over, it’ll be called the [...]

The F-bomb with a smile . . .

Sometimes, no other word will do.  The smiles on the people dropping the F-bomb in the linked video almost make the word sound friendly . . . like it doesn’t really belong on George Carlin’s list of the “seven words you can’t say on television.”  Indeed, it reminded me of when Carlin made the case [...]

Every politician should be forced to watch this . . .

. . . to see what it sounds like to us when they apologize after the fact.

David Brooks wakes up and smells the Kool-Aid while “Republicans for Obama” remain as clueless as ever

There is a lot posted on righty blogs already (like at Ace, Michelle, and HotAir) about NYT columnist David Brooks’s all-too-predictable lament that he was hoodwinked by Obama the moderate during the campaign only to find the country run by Obama the extremist:
Those of us who consider ourselves moderates — moderate-conservative, in my case — [...]
