Jeremiah Wright is Not a ProphetPosted by Deuce Geary on March 24th, 2008
That may be a self-evident point, but it’s worth noting in light of a Sunday New York Times article about how preachers were adjusting their Easter sermons to incorporate thoughts they had after listening to Barack Obama’s speech last Tuesday. The article refers to Jeremiah Wright’s “fiery, prophetic preaching style. “ Today, Dennis Prager pointed out two significant ways in which Wright is not prophetic. First, the prophets warned against calling good evil and calling evil good – Wright does what the prophets warned against. Second, prophets made their audiences uncomfortable and forced them to examine themselves, while Wright blames others instead of challenging his listeners. Now, to be fair, the NYT didn’t call Wright a prophet; the article used “prophetic” it as an adjective to describe his style of preaching. And its probably unfair to level these criticisms against Wright generally based on a few sermons, though it is at least fair to say that these specific sermons do not exhibit prophetic behavior. But there is danger in thinking about Wright as a prophetic figure, even in style. Prophets were always right. Speaking on behalf of God, how could they be anything but right? Associating prophecy, or even prophetical style, with any preacher risks cloaking him with the absolute correctness of the prophets. Obama may have said he doesn’t agree with everything Wright says, but there will be plenty of people willing to do so, especially if any variation of the word “prophet” is used frequently around Wright. 6 comments to Jeremiah Wright is Not a ProphetYour incentive to comment: |

Prophets speak the truth. They do so in service to God–about God’s Word and God’s promise to deal with all sin. God must deal with sin.
God speaks to people and nations because nations are made up of people.
All prophets all have several things in common:
1) Prophets love God’s word. Prophets study God’s word. God speaks to prophets more clearly than others (spirit to spirit) as a result of the Prophets obedience to God.
2) God sends the prophet to ‘warn’ people and nations when God’s wrath is upon them. Giving the people and/or the nation the opportunity to repent, turn from their evil ways so that God can heal them (in other words so the person or nation can avoid the calamity that God will have to bring upon the person or nation to deal with their rebellious sins).
3) Prophets speak and teach the Word of God in truth. They do not add to the Word of God nor do they take away form it. The prophet’s goal is to speak the truth of God–no matter the consequences to him/herself. This is done very forcefully and may be construed as anger at times. However, the motivation of the prohet is ALWAYS love.
4) The prophet is annointed by God. It is a holy callilng.
5) The prophet has a gift to take complicated scriputural text and make it easily understood by all who listen.
6) Prophets are almost ALWAYS hated and maligned by the poeple he or she is sent to warn.
7) Prophets are often killed for attempting to save the person or nation to whom the prohet is sent to speak.
8) Prophets are almost ALWAYS called crazy or liars. When sinful people or nations are confronted about their sins; they almost always rebel at the truth and continue sinning. Often time the sinners compound thier sin by killing the prophet.
- Quite simply, everything Jeremiah Wright said was TRUE;
- The theology upon which his statements rest are TRUE;
- Therefore, America can choose to ignore the warning of God or continue deeper into her sins.
The prophet only warns, God brings all things about. God sees the hearts of the American people. He sees it through our actions not our words. God can care less that you call upon His name or call yourselves Christian–but continue in sin. When people who call themselves Christian consistently behave in rebellious and sinful activities (will not repent), the scripture clearly shows Jesus’ thoughts “Depart from me, I never knew you.” and the consequences are clear throughout the bible.
Please remember the scripture:
- Not one word from God’s scripture will come back void.
- God is not a man that he should lie.
If you do not believe every word of God is true, then you are foolish. Do not embarass yourself and call yourself a Christian. If you do not believe every word in the bible is true, you are professing that you worship a fairy tale. A Lie. True Christians (devout Christians) know that every word, period, comma, etc., is 100% TRUE.
I; like Jeremiah Wright, pray that the United States will repent. As a devout Christian, I pray we do so because I love this country. It is a nation where I live, my family, friends and so many other God fearing people (devout Judeo Christians). But, as true citizen of the US and a child of God– I would likewise be guilty if I did not take a stand to say that this nation MUST repent–and turn to the ways of God.
As a nation, we have much to repent for. God is looking for his leaders to take up the call. REPENT. For the salvation of God is at hand.
God Bless America, but only if she repents.
Tee: “Prophets speak the truth.” – Not all prophets do. Some are liars and deceivers; See Deut 18:20-22.
Where did you get these things that are signs of a prophet or that they have in common? Since you claim to be of the Christian faith please show the appropriate texts. Some of your “things in common” have to do with teachers in the Christian faith, not prophets-see Ephesians in the Christian New Testament for proof of this.

Please map where Black Liberation theology is in the Christian New Testament because in reading it, I sure have not seen it. I have read: Galatians 3:28(KJV)-There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
WOW. No difference between black, white, brown, yellow, blue, green or whatever color or ethnicity a person is. I think you really need to think about that.
“If you do not believe every word of God is true, then you are foolish.” I need to ask, which version? KJV? NIV? NASB? AIV? If people were not saved until one of these versions came out that makes Jesus a liar (“This day you will be with me in paradise”)-you can do the search for that verse in any decent translation you choose.
“As a nation, we have much to repent for. God is looking for his leaders to take up the call. REPENT. For the salvation of God is at hand.” – You are correct. The U.S. has much to repent for. So does the REST OF THE WORLD. However, since we are here, this is where we should work, right? Could you please show me in the Christian New Testament where God is “looking for his leaders to take up the call.”? As far as I can tell, it is to EVERYONE.
Tee, if you are still reading this, I hope to have somehow made you think about what you have written. Your comments are always welcome here.

I just liked the man, myself.
Whether he is or not he may be a man of God. God has so few of them. So lets be careful whom we point fingers at. Noone is alike, this includes God’s Preachers and Prophets. As God said to me one time, “don’t you start pointing fingers”. I rest my case.
